Throughout Kurt Russell’s appearing retrospective for GQ, the famed actor gave his ideas on the ever-constant debate of which survivor is the Factor on the finish of John Carpenter’s The Factor. Through the shoot, what can be proven of the divisive ending was a matter of competition even for Carpenter himself, who now swears he’s the only one who knows who the Thing is—although director of pictures Dean Cundey has claimed the answer is in the eyes of the final two left standing.
So who does Russell suppose is secretly internet hosting an alien creature in that frosty scene: his character, MacReady, or Keith David’s Childs? Wanting again on the much-loved sci-fi horror basic, the star recalled, “John was by no means fairly happy with the final scene. His foremost factor was he didn’t wish to take the viewers on a trip for 2 hours and convey [them] again to sq. one. If you’re doing a film, you don’t know what you bought. You type of usually know what you bought, however you don’t know precisely how that is gonna go collectively and what’s gonna come out of it. And naturally John did nearly on a regular basis since you perceive—, he’s not like most guys.”

The fantastic thing about the thriller is what Russell loves most. “I feel the viewers can determine it out. I feel that’s what makes The Factor nice, is you don’t know. And that each one led itself all the way down to what was the final line I stated, I feel it’s identical to, ‘Why don’t we simply sit right here for some time, see what occurs?’ If [the two characters] might work out a technique to kill one another in precisely the identical time, I feel perhaps that’s the subsequent step there,” he theorized, and added, “That, to me was John at perhaps his absolute peak as a director.
